One tough "CDC Cowboy" was developed by Dr. Brian Rossnagel, CDC, Saskatoon.

The new dual purpose feed/forage barley, CDC Cowboy is expected to be very popular with cattlemen and ranchers in western Canada. CDC Cowboy is a two-row feed barley variety developed by Dr. Brian Rossnagel at the Crop Development Centre in Saskatoon. It will be available through SeCan members in spring 2008. This variety was developed to produce high quality feed grain or high quality forage under a broad range of moisture and fertility conditions.

CDC Cowboy was the top yielding forage barley as it went through the forage Cooperative Registration trials in 2002 and 2003. Its parentage is a cross between a 2-row and a 6-row barley which gives it a vigorous growth habit, along with some other unique traits. Specifically, it performs relatively better than other barley varieties under low input management, in lighter soils or in drought-stressed environments.

CDC Cowboy was selected and trialed through periods of drought in 2001, 2002 and 2003. In field trials that experienced drought, the yield of most entries dropped by at least 50% whereas the yield of CDC Cowboy was reduced by only 30%. CDC Cowboy produced the highest dry matter of any variety in the 2002 and 2003 forage barley coop trials which were run at 10 sites over the Prairies. Forage Coop testing sites included Brandon, Hamiota, Saskatoon, Lacombe, Neapolis and Lethbridge.

Rugby #1 OP / January 02, 2008

SeCan is pleased to launch Rugby, a new open-pollinated Roundup Ready® argentine canola variety developed by Lembke®. Rugby was the top-yielding open-pollinated variety in the 2007 Prairie Canola Variety Trials (PCVT) with an average yield level of 89% of the hybrid check varieties. Rugby’s yield can also be compared to 46A65 - the open-pollinated check variety used in the Cooperative Registration Trials (Coop Trials) in western Canada. On average, over two years of coop testing (2005 and 2006) Rugby yielded 105% of 46A65. This top performance was further confirmed in the 2007 Prairie Canola Variety Trials (mid-season zone) where Rugby yielded 107% of 46A65. Bottom line for yield, Rugby is the best available in an open-pollinated Roundup Ready variety.

Rugby’s impressive yield is further enhanced by strong straw and a Resistant rating for Blackleg. In addition, the height (approximately 107 cm) and the medium maturity of Rugby are similar to several other check varieties such as 46A65, 5020 or 45H21. Rugby also carries a high percent oil content in its seed - approximately 1% higher in oil content than check varieties like 46A65.

Data from the 2007 PCVT trials shows that Rugby is well adapted right across the Prairies, from the Peace River region through to Manitoba. SeCan is excited about this new canola variety and the opportunities it offers western growers for higher yields and better returns from their canola crop.

Visit the SeCan Varieties for Sale” section to find Rugby seed near you. Suggested retail price is $3.59 per pound (for limited time). For more detailed variety information, refer to the Rugby Technical Bulletin.
